I guess it’s time to record all the happenings around my house.

I leave my car unlocked. There isn’t anything of mine in the of any value. But last night someone went through my car and the van and dig out all the crap from the glove box and my center counsel. A bunch of receipts were sprawled around my seat and my owners manual was out of the glove box.

Similar for the van, but I found out later when my wife went on a day trip to the country with her sister her sister left her wallet in our van and it’s gone.

Well now that sucks.

None of our neighbors camera got anything but me getting ready for work at 4:50am. (This job site is 1.5 hour drive)

So what’s a good system for a few cameras and some sort of storage system for the house? I guess I may need to buy a computer to work it or something.

They left my $200 makita circular saw in the back seat, wtf?

This sucks.... for my sister-in-law.

I’ve got a few Netgear Arlo cameras, and like them (no monthly fee for a week’s worth of storage in their cloud).

Just be safe, you need to get yourself a 4k Camera with a built in motion sensor+thermal detector and 6 barrel 7.62mm rounds firing Minigun at the very least, all controlled by an App made by a Chinese company that will scrub all data from your phone. This is America after all.

I have a Nest  cam btw, don’t pay for Cloud storage $6 a month, 30 days storage. So it stores only last 3 hours but that’s fine for me.

I lost a laptop, an ipad, several external drives, a phone, and a ring in a smash and grab on my rental truck last year. We were at a restaurant eating lunch when it happened. The cop who responded asked if we had been shopping. Thieves will sit outside stores and watch for people to leave with a lot of bags. The thieves will follow them until they stop at a restaurant, then steal everything - even if it’s in the trunk.

I agree, thieves suck.

That’s why I no longer leave anything of value in a visible spot anywhere visible in any of my vehicles at any time, even when parked in front of my house.

As for cameras, I can’t help you there. I’ve looked into a bunch of options, but most consumer options either require you to store everything in the cloud or use a cloud-based app to control everything. I find that too invasive for my taste.

We have Blink and I m happy with it. You can buy a “kit” with a number of motion sensor cameras that send alerts to a phone app. We have them pointed at the front and back door plus the driveway.

I have a Ring doorbell cam in front and one of their regular cams on my patio, and I’m pretty happy with them. FWIW, service with one cam is free, any more and it’s $10 a month.

Ditto for Arlo, and the base station I have lets you also save to a USB stick in addition to the week cloud storage . I bought a cheap USB drive off Amazon and it stores well over 6 months for me, and when it gets full it just writes new files over the oldest one.

I’ll be honest, I built my house in 2016 and had it pre-wired for cameras. After a lot of research the wireless ones were just easier to deal with. I have to charge each camera every two months or so, but that minor hassle is worth it for me.

Yeah... I’ve thought about it. I keep a key in the ignition too. Whoever it was was looking for a quick easy grab. Or guns. I don’t keep that in my car.

I use zmoto. Free cloud storage for 12 hours. I don’t have them connected to a computer.

If t hat POS equinox gets stolen, that’s be ok with me. Sure it’s kind of enabling, but I haven’t car shopped in a long time.

I read about people's wallets getting stolen from their cars regularly in our local police blotter. It blows my mind that anyone would leave their wallet in their car. Let alone someone else's car!

Highly recommend Nest, having used Ring and been disappointed with video quality. Continuous recording, cloud storage options, and really great video quality if you have sufficient bandwidth. If you don’t want to spend a lot you can also save with a first gen Nest Outdoor—I have that and the newer IQ generation outdoor camera and honestly think the earlier one is better.  Also, both Nest and Ring have apps that eliminate the need for a computer.

Would insurance pay out if they found out it was unlocked?

I don’t know. I’m sure they try and claim negligence, but I’ve left it like this for a few years. When I park at work and drive box trucks for days or weeks on end I remove the key and stash it & lock the doors.

This may be a question for CoFL.
